How To Lose Belly Fat - What You Must Do and Why
Two thirds of all Americans are overweight and needless to say the belly fat comes with the weight. No one wants to be fat. It embarrasses us, limits us economically, limits us socially, sets limits on what activities we can do, saps our energy, and is unhealthy.
Belly fat seems to be especially dangerous versus fat elsewhere on the body. It is not just the fat you see there either. There is a type of fat called "visceral fat", deep belly fat, which is the fat that surrounds the organs within. This fat is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome which is to say it can take your life.
This fat also is associated with greater atherosclerosis and boost inflammation. Both are a threat to your heart and survival. The results of one study have shown that in men for every two inches increase in waist size (above the ideal) there is a 17% increased risk of dying from heart disease.
If you are a man with a waist size over 40 or a woman with a waist size greater than 35 you are likely headed for trouble down the road.
Okay, what do we do to lose belly fat? One reason I have for writing this article is that there is a ton of bad information out there on this very subject. There are those that want to give you a specific exercise targeting your abdomen or stomach for weight loss there.
Any one who is willing to take the time and do some online research on medical sites will readily learn there is no such thing as an exercise for a specific area of the body that will result in weight loss there alone. Weight loss is a whole body or none proposition. When you begin to lose weight it will be an overall body weight loss experience.
So, if there is no specific exercise that will do the job what will it take to lose belly fat? The answer is exercise in general. In a study that came out in 2005 that took place at Duke University one of the results was that "higher amounts of exercise cut deep belly fat and fat around the waist." You may be asking yourself how do I exercise when I am so out of shape and overweight. That is a good question deserving an answer. You take it one step at a time. I started my exercise program at the age of 50 one step at a time, slowly but surely increasing my activity. I started by walking, then graduated in due time to jogging, and added some weight lifting. I dropped 20 pounds that I have never regained all without dieting.
While walking, and perhaps later gentle jogging, are great places to start your weight loss program as time goes by you should add a weight lifting segment to your exercise program. Weight lifting builds muscle and the more muscle you have the more calories your body burns versus storing them. In fact, once you slim down a little the weight lifting becomes the more important activity for the body will eventually adjust to the cardio exercise and the weight will start coming back unless you add the weights.
But, first things first, you cannot lose that deep belly fat which is so dangerous until you first lose that which you can see. That will require exercise okay but also a change in the way you eat, not a diet but a change. For help on that as well as help on exercise follow the link in my resource box below.
