The Truth About Gravity Hill
Have you ever heard of a place called Gravity Hill? Maybe it has been referred to as Magnetic Hill, Mystery Hill, Gravity Road, Haunted Hill, or Anti-Gravity Hill. This type of so-called "mystery" can be found in numerous locations around the world. These optical illusions are created by a hilly road where the level of the horizon is obscured.
Visual clues to the actual vertical location of the road and your vehicle on that road, such as trees and other objects may be leaning to reinforce the illusion. These places have often become tourist attractions, making claims that it is a "mystery", some even say these hills are due to magnetic or gravitational irregularities. It is difficult to decide from a far but when you actually visit one, the optical illusion is so real you can almost touch it.
At this point you may be wondering what exactly the optical illusion is. When you drive your vehicle onto one of these "Magnetic" Hills, after putting it in Neutral (feet off the pedals), your car will begin to drive uphill, back the way you came. That sounds pretty crazy doesn't it? People for years have been visiting these sights across the world to see for themselves the magic of these hills. It has been a great topic at dinner tables, parties, and bored nights out with friends.
It may sound like a fable, a ghost story or something your Grandpa made up to get your goose-bumps rising, but its true. These places do exist. You should really look into one in your area, and go check it out for yourself. I know I have. The only reason I didn't go there tonight is the warnings I read this afternoon about Gravity Hill and bad weather. Apparently it's not a good place to be in the rain. So don't go tonight, wait till the sun is shining and your senses are in tip top condition, so you can get the entire experience.
Mostly every person I know has been to the Gravity Hill in our County, which is located in Penngrove, CA. Through the years it has played host to many manic lovers, joking friends, curious travelers, intrigued minds, aspiring scientists, and sweet family outings. Finding one in your area should not prove difficult, just Google the words Gravity Hill and a plethora of information can be found. I even found a site that tells where to find each known Gravity Hill in the United States of America.
Most tourist sites will tell you these Hills are due to supernatural causes, or even extraterestrial influences. Its a fun idea, except its just not true. The illusion is serious entertainment, even standing back on the road the vehicle appears to be traveling back up the road, the way it came, towards you. Yet it all refers back to the optical illusion, the slope involved, and the stationary visual clues that trick your logical mind into believing.
